Pietro’s Fight Supports Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research
Since co-founding Jets.com, a private aviation company, accomplished New Jersey entrepreneur Edgar Alacan grew the company from a small operation to a leader in the private jet rental industry. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Edgar Alacan is committed to a number of local charitable organizations and is a supporter of the New York City nonprofit Pietro’s Fight.
Pietro’s Fight was established in 2012 by Manni and Dayna Scarso after their young son Pietro was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The disorder is caused by a lack of dystrophin, a protein that supports muscle growth. DMD usually affects boys and symptoms such as muscle weakness appear around a child’s third birthday. As the disorder progresses, weakness in cardiac and respiratory muscles can lead to life-threatening illnesses.
As a result of medical advances, people with DMD are living longer and fulfilling lives. However, a cure is yet to be found. Pietro’s Fight funds research on promising drugs and clinical trials that will one day bring life-saving medicines and procedures to children living with DMD.
